Imagination.

Human vs.Computer

The Project

This artwork was created to erase limits around imagination and artificial intelligence. It brings the two together in a creative project. You can see the result in Exhibit no.1 and Exhibit no.2 below. These two videos compare portraits created by artists and portraits created by machine learning website. All of the pictures were heavily filtered to erase anything but the outline. The aim of the project is to show how these two very different areas can collide when stripped to the basics.

Exibit no.1

Pencil-drawn portraits that were created out of imagination for this assignment. Arranged in a video that shows them as altered photos to disguise them. Then they change into originals.

Exibit no.2

Faces created out of artificial imagination. By the website thispersondoesnotexist.com. They are arranged in a video that shows them as altered photos to disguise them. Then they change into originals.

One of the crucial moments of technological progress was the invention of machine learning; a process that allows computers to improve automatically through experience. The first machine learning was created in the 1950s by Arthur Samuel.

The fascinating idea of machine learning and artificial intelligence brought life to this project. The subject area is the comparison of human imagination and artificial imagination. In particular, human faces that were created by an artist which, in this case, is me, and faces that were created by an online machine learning website thispersondoesnotexist.com.

Machine learning was based on the theory of neuron interactions in the human brain. This project is taking imagination as a comparison to machine learning and artificial intelligence. It compares portraits created by an artist with artificially created faces. They are arranged in a video that showcases them. At first, we can only see an outline of the faces because all the portraits were heavily filtered to erase the differences and leave the outline of a human face. Then the originals are shown to exaggerate the contrast between the two sides.

About the artist

My name is Irina Chekhomova. Welcome to my final year project website. I am the artist behind the portraits for this project. I have been drawing and creating art my whole life. I am very proud of the way my art is incorporated into this work.

This project was intended as a creative way to show that the human brain has infinite resources. It collects its own data and has an incredible way of storing it. While the computer has a more structured way of solving problems and getting information, the brain is lead by emotions and personal experiences. Nevertheless, the brain is an incredible mechanism that is still not fully understood by scientists.

I hope with this project I can bring awareness about our own intelligence. I want to inspire people to create something incredible based on their own brain activity.
